Symptoms of Achilles Tendon Pain

Achilles tendon pain refers to inflammation or injury of the tendon that connects the calf muscles to the heel bone. It is located at the back of the lower leg just above the heel, and plays a vital role in walking, running, and jumping. Causes include overuse, sudden increases in activity, exercising on uneven surfaces, obesity, and older age. Symptoms may include stiffness, swelling, tenderness, and difficulty pushing off the foot. In more serious cases, a partial tear or complete rupture can occur, leading to sharp pain and weakness. A podiatrist can diagnose the condition, recommend imaging if needed, and create a personalized treatment plan. If you have sustained an Achilles tenon injury, it is suggested that you consult a podiatrist who can offer effective relief and treatment solutions.

What Is the Achilles Tendon?

The Achilles tendon is a tendon that connects the lower leg muscles and calf to the heel of the foot. It is the strongest tendon in the human body and is essential for making movement possible. Because this tendon is such an integral part of the body, any injuries to it can create immense difficulties and should immediately be presented to a doctor.

What Are the Symptoms of an Achilles Tendon Injury?

There are various types of injuries that can affect the Achilles tendon. The two most common injuries are Achilles tendinitis and ruptures of the tendon.

Achilles Tendinitis Symptoms

  • Inflammation
  • Dull to severe pain
  • Increased blood flow to the tendon
  • Thickening of the tendon

Rupture Symptoms

  • Extreme pain and swelling in the foot
  • Total immobility

Treatment and Prevention

Achilles tendon injuries are diagnosed by a thorough physical evaluation, which can include an MRI. Treatment involves rest, physical therapy, and in some cases, surgery. However, various preventative measures can be taken to avoid these injuries, such as:

  • Thorough stretching of the tendon before and after exercise
  • Strengthening exercises like calf raises, squats, leg curls, leg extensions, leg raises, lunges, and leg presses

Foot Strengthening Exercises for Flat Feet

Flat feet, also known as fallen arches, occur when the arches of the feet collapse or do not develop properly, causing the entire sole to touch the ground. There are flexible flat feet, where an arch appears when not bearing weight, and rigid flat feet, where the arch is always absent. Heel stretches gently lengthen the Achilles tendon to reduce strain and improve flexibility. Tennis ball rolls massage the sole to relieve tension and stimulate muscles. Arch lifts strengthen intrinsic foot muscles by raising the arch while keeping toes grounded. Additionally, calf raises build lower leg strength to better support foot structure. A podiatrist can assess alignment, recommend orthotics, and design a personalized treatment plan. If you have pain or discomfort from flat feet, it is suggested that you consult a podiatrist who can offer effective relief and management solutions.

Exercising your feet regularly with the proper foot wear is a great way to prevent injuries and build strength. If you have any concerns about your feet, contact one of our podiatrists from Prince William Foot & Ankle Center, PC. Yoga Poses That May Help Relieve Plantar Fasciitis

Yoga poses can support flexibility and strength in the feet, and may help ease plantar fasciitis discomfort. Upward salute is performed by standing tall, lifting the arms overhead, and gently stretching through the arches while grounding the heels. Chair pose involves bending the knees while keeping weight evenly distributed through the feet to strengthen the arches and lower legs. High lunge is done by stepping one foot back, pressing the heel down, and stretching the calf and plantar tissues. Additionally, table top toe pose is performed on hands and knees with toes tucked under to stretch the bottom of the feet. A podiatrist can diagnose plantar fasciitis, guide safe movement, and create a comprehensive treatment plan, which may include effective yoga poses. If you have symptoms of plantar fasciitis, it is suggested that you consult a podiatrist who can offer effective relief and treatment techniques.

Stretching the Feet

Being the backbone of the body, the feet carry your entire weight and can easily become overexerted, causing cramps and pain. As with any body part, stretching your feet can serve many benefits. From increasing flexibility to even providing some pain relief, be sure to give your feet a stretch from time to time. This is especially important for athletes or anyone performing aerobic exercises, but anyone experiencing foot pain or is on their feet constantly should also engage in this practice.

Great ways to stretch your feet:

  • Crossing one leg over the others and carefully pull your toes back. Do 10-20 repetitions and repeat the process for each foot
  • Face a wall with your arms out and hands flat against the wall. Step back with one foot and keep it flat on the floor while moving the other leg forward. Lean towards the wall until you feel a stretch. Hold for 30 seconds and perform 10 repetitions for each foot
  • Be sure not to overextend or push your limbs too hard or you could risk pulling or straining your muscle

Individuals who tend to their feet by regular stretching every day should be able to minimize foot pain and prevent new problems from arising.

Volleyball Ankle Sprains and Podiatric Care

A sprained ankle in volleyball is a common injury caused by landing awkwardly from a jump or quickly changing direction on the court. It occurs when the ligaments that support the ankle are stretched or torn beyond their normal range. A first-degree sprain involves mild stretching of the ligaments with slight pain and swelling. A second-degree sprain includes partial tearing leading to increased pain, swelling, and instability. Additionally, a third-degree sprain is a complete ligament tear causing significant pain, swelling, and loss of ankle support. A podiatrist can help by accurately diagnosing the severity, providing proper treatment, and guiding rehabilitation to restore strength and stability. If you have sprained an ankle while playing volleyball, it is suggested that you consult a podiatrist who can offer the best treatment for you, enabling you to return to playing again as soon as possible.

Ankle and foot injuries are common among athletes and in many sports. They can be caused by several problems and may be potentially serious. If you are feeling pain or think you were injured in a sporting event or when exercising, consult with one of our podiatrists from Prince William Foot & Ankle Center, PC. Common Injuries

The most common injuries that occur in sporting activities include:

  • Achilles Tendonitis
  • Achilles Tendon Rupture
  • Ankle Sprains
  • Broken Foot
  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Stress Fractures
  • Turf Toe

Symptoms

Symptoms vary depending upon the injury and in some cases, there may be no symptoms at all. However, in most cases, some form of symptom is experienced. Pain, aching, burning, bruising, tenderness, tightness or stiffness, sensation loss, difficulty moving, and swelling are the most common symptoms.

Treatment

Just as symptoms vary depending upon the injury, so do treatment options. A common treatment method is known as the RICE method. This method involves rest, applying ice, compression and elevating the afflicted foot or ankle. If the injury appears to be more serious, surgery might be required, such as arthroscopic or reconstructive surgery. Lastly, rehabilitation or therapy might be needed to gain full functionality in the afflicted area. Any discomfort experienced by an athlete must be evaluated by a licensed, reputable medical professional.
